How to use this calculator

Add each purchase with its execution price, quantity, and percentage buy fee. Enter the percentage sale fee to estimate the price needed to recover purchase costs after a sale.

How the calculation works

Total quantity = sum of transaction quantities. Total invested = sum of (price × quantity × (1 + transaction fee)). Weighted average cost per unit = total invested ÷ total quantity. Fee-adjusted break-even sale price = average cost ÷ (1 − sale fee).

Worked example

Buying 0.2 coin at $30,000 and 0.1 coin at $36,000 with no fees gives 0.3 coin and $9,600 invested. Weighted average cost is $32,000 per coin, not the simple average of the two prices ($33,000).

Assumptions and limitations

Uses user-entered fills and percentage fees. It excludes fixed charges, spread, slippage, network costs, and taxes. This weighted average is a planning estimate and is not a determination of tax cost basis or a broker statement.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the weighted average different from a simple average?

Each execution price is weighted by the quantity bought, so a larger purchase affects the result more.

Can I enter more than two purchases?

Yes. Add as many as 100 purchase rows.

Does the result determine my tax basis?

No. Tax rules and accounting methods depend on jurisdiction and records; this tool does not provide tax accounting.
