Compare coverage scenarios
Each amount is monthly essentials multiplied by a sample period, less savings entered.
| Selected period | Target | Remaining |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | $10,500.00 | $5,500.00 |
| 6 months | $21,000.00 | $16,000.00 |
| 9 months | $31,500.00 | $26,500.00 |
The target is a planning estimate, not a required standard. Your income stability, household, insurance, and access to other resources may matter.
How to use this calculator
Start with recent bills for costs you would need to keep paying during an income disruption, such as housing, basic utilities, groceries, necessary transportation and care, insurance, and required debt minimums. Enter that monthly total, choose a coverage period that fits your circumstances, then subtract accessible savings you have set aside for emergencies.
How the calculation works
Selected target = essential monthly expenses × user-selected coverage months. Savings gap = max(0, selected target − accessible savings reserved for emergencies). The optional 12-month contribution estimate = savings gap ÷ 12; it assumes equal deposits and no interest.
Worked example
With $2,000 in essential monthly expenses and a chosen 3-month period, the target is $6,000. If $1,500 is already reserved and accessible, the gap is $4,500, or $375 per month over 12 months before any interest.
Assumptions and limitations
The chosen coverage period is a personal planning input, not a universal rule or required standard. This estimate does not model income volatility, how long it may take to replace income, insurance reimbursements, changing costs, interest earned, or other resources. Do not count the same savings toward this reserve and another goal.
Frequently asked questions
What expenses should I include?
Use household costs that would need to continue during a disruption, such as housing, basic utilities, groceries, necessary transportation and care, insurance, and required debt minimums. The right list depends on your household.
Which savings should I subtract?
Subtract accessible money you have intentionally reserved for emergencies. Leave out funds already committed to bills or other goals so the same dollars are not counted twice.
Is there one correct number of months?
No. Choose a coverage period based on your costs, income stability, dependents, insurance, and other circumstances; the calculator does not prescribe a target.
How is the monthly contribution shown?
It divides the remaining gap evenly over 12 months and assumes no interest. Change the time horizon or use a savings-goal tool if you want to model a different schedule.
